Safety Programs

The Fire Department prides itself on its safety record and achievements.  Keeping residents and businesses safe is a key component of proactive fire service programming.  The Department offers a variety of services and programs to assist and educate our community on safety.

Illinois Premise Alert Program

The Illinois Premise Alert Program Act (96-0788) became law in 2009.  This Act is to ensure that consistently high levels of public safety services are available to all members of the State of Illinois, including people who may require special consideration in order to access services.  This program shall seek to afford people with disabilities and/or special needs the same level of public safety services while alerting public safety responders to individuals with special needs.

If you live or work within the Village of Streamwood and complete a permission slip about your special needs, your information will be placed on file with our dispatch center.  Your name, home or work address, telephone number, and information about your disability or special needs will enable emergency personnel to recognize that your call may require special handling.  Please be assured that all information will be kept confidential.

Emergency Warning System

The safety and protection of Streamwood residents is enhanced with a number of community warning systems.  These systems let you know about weather-related or other emergency situations.

The Village of Streamwood operates the outdoor emergency warning system.  It is designed to give the residents advanced warning in case of an imminent threat to the community due to attack or severe weather.  Most of us are familiar with the sound of this warning siren, as it is tested on the first Tuesday of every month at 10:00 am.

The severe weather warning signal is a 3 to 5 minute STEADY tone designed to give advanced warning of funnel clouds or tornados.  The system is activated when a tornado or funnel cloud has been reported to be within 5 miles of the Village, or when a confirmed sighting of a funnel cloud has been reported by trained personnel.

The attack signal is a 3 to 5 minute WAVERING tone that is used in the event of an actual attack or a missile launch against the United States. The Village has never had to, nor do we ever hope to, activate this system.

If you hear these sirens, take cover immediately and utilize the Emergency Broadcast System on your local TV or radio station.  This will provide the most up to date information about the threat and let you know when the threat has passed.  Please note that the National Weather Service, and not the Village, will give an “all clear” notification to severe weather warnings.

A new community warning system is being instituted by the Streamwood Park District for lightning prediction.  The lightning prediction system will be activated when weather conditions are most likely to produce lightning strikes.  These sirens have a distinctly different tone than the outdoor emergency system.  When activated, the siren will give three 15 second horn blasts.  If you hear these sirens, you are encouraged to go indoors until an “all-clear" siren is activated, which is a series of three 5 second blasts.   This system has been newly installed at Park Place.  The Park District plans to test the system every Tuesday.

Fire Prevention

The Bureau of Fire Prevention is charged with the responsibility of fire and life safety management for all of the occupancies within the Village.  This is accomplished through regular safety inspections performed by certified fire inspectors.  Over 700 inspections are performed annually in an effort to provide residents, employees and visitors the safest environment possible in which to live, work or shop.

Training

A very important aspect of the Department is continuing employee education.  Each year, our employees log more than 6,200 hours of professional training to enhance their skills.  Because of the broad array of services offered, firefighters attend regular training sessions to maintain their skill levels and learn new methods and procedures.  Some examples of these courses include vehicle extrication, apparatus engineering, high angle rescue and, of course, firefighting and EMS.  Every employee within the organization participates in ongoing training to provide the community with the highest-level possible of professional services.
