Traffic Safety Awards
The Streamwood Police Department was awarded 2nd Place in the 1999 “Chief’s Challenge” Award Program.  The International Association of Chiefs of Police, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Sheriffs Association, sponsor an annual “Chief’s Challenge” for traffic safety programs.  This annual competition for police agencies is designed to encourage maximum use of safety belts, impaired driving enforcement and education, and speed enforcement and to recognize those police agencies that have designed and implemented exceptional traffic safety programs.

The Streamwood Police Department received this recognition due to programs such as their “Click it or Ticket” campaign, first initiated in 1997, their traffic safety and DUI programs for high school students, and their ongoing campaign to involve parents in the free services of child safety seat technicians.  The Police Department technicians, trained officers with national certification, will instruct residents, at no charge, on the proper way to install child safety seats.

The Streamwood Police Department was selected as winner of a specially equipped 1999 Ford Streamwood Police exhibit their prize for the 1998 Chief's Challenge.Expedition police vehicle, was recognized as the "Rookie of the Year" and their traffic safety programs were awarded second place recognition in the category of municipal departments with 51-100 officers in the 1998 “Chief's Challenge” Awards Program.

Streamwood's overall traffic safety program consists of public safety educational programs such as "Fatal Vision" training in drivers’ education classes; roadside safety checks; C.A.R.E. (Citizen Assisted Radar Enforcement) program; Operation Safe Stop school bus safety program; and significant enforcement efforts throughout the year.
