The Streamwood Police Department recently acquired its second canine unit.  The Streamwood  Police Department s current canine unit consists of Officer Alex VanDerLinden and Canine Zarak. Zarak is a pure bred German Shepherd who was born in   Germany  in December 2002. Zarak is a general purpose canine with training from Tops Kennels. The canine unit is used for tracking, narcotics detection, area and article searches, building searches, handler protection, demonstrations and specialized tasks as situations require.

Officer VanDerLinden and Canine Zarak have been working together for approximately two years. Zarak will remain on duty for approximately five to eight years. The Canine unit is used on almost a daily bases for one of the listed tasks in addition to supporting patrol and tactical operations.
