Recent Burglaries

Release date: 2/10/2012

The Village of Streamwood has experienced several residential burglaries in the past month. Most of these crimes were committed during daylight hours and the method of entry into the homes was consistent. The offender usually rings the doorbell several times or knocks on the front door repeatedly. If no one is home, the front door is kicked in and small items are removed from the home.

Please read the below Burglary Prevention Tips and remember to call 911 if you see any suspicious people in your neighborhood.

In order to reduce your chance of becoming a victim; remember these important tips:

  • Check to be sure your doors and windows are locked – both when you are in the house and when you’re away. Make sure they are working properly, strong and not easily broken.
  • Be sure to have a secondary lock on sliding patio doors.
  • Do not leave boxes that contained your recent high priced purchases out for the garbage man for all to see. Turn the boxes inside out so no marking can be seen and tape them up.
  • If you have basement windows check to ensure they are locked securely. Get sturdy window well covers that lock from the inside.
  • Always leave an appearance that someone is home. Leave a television or a radio on. Do not let papers or mail pile up.
  • Make a list and take photographs of your expensive belongings. Store these papers in a safe place.
  • Don’t keep large amounts of money or jewelry in the house.
  • Don’t open your door before you know who’s there. Ask a stranger for proof of identity before opening the door. If you are unsure or feel nervous, call the POLICE!
  • Get to know your neighbors.
  • A good alarm system can help keep you and your property safe.
  • Report all suspicious subjects in your neighborhood to the police.
