D.A.R.E.
The Streamwood Police Department D.A.R.E. program (Drug
Abuse Resistance Education) was founded in 1990. The
program currently has three officers working in eight
elementary schools, primarily with 5th grade students.
The curriculum includes teaching our students the eight ways
to say no to drugs, and techniques for enhancing their
self-esteem.
Objective
The Streamwood Police Department along with the combined
effort of D.A.R.E certified law enforcement officers,
educators, students, parents and the community, offers an
education program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug
abuse and violence among children and youth.
The
objective of the D.A.R.E. Program and the Police Department is
to help students recognize and resist the many direct and
subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with
alcohol, tobacco, inhalants or other drugs, or to engage in
violence.
The D.A.R.E. Program strategy is to accomplish seven goals:
- Increase Bonding (family, school and community).
- Increase Development of Social Competence.
- Enhance/Develop Communication Skills.
- Develop Self-Esteem.
- Improve Decision Making Skills.
- Improve Conflict Resolution.
- Explain the positive alternative activities to drug
abuse.
