History

In the mid-1950s, the area now known as the Village of Streamwood was farm and pastureland intersected by Schaumburg, Bartlett and Oltendorf Roads.  On February 9, 1957, Streamwood was incorporated as a Village and with the establishment of the Village, a Department of Public Safety was created on June 20, 1957.

The Director of Public Safety was the sole employee of the Department, with his official office listed in the model home being used as a Village Hall, but all records were kept in his residence.  Subsequent Police Departments moved as the Village Hall did, to farmhouses and single family homes until the first Village Hall/Police Department was built at 401 East Irving Road in 1967.

Highlights in the history of the Police Department are:

  • June 20, 1957:  Creation of Department of Public Safety.
  • December 1959:  Establishing a Table of Organization for the Police Department to include 1 captain, 1 lieutenant, 3 sergeants and patrolmen in such number as to be determined by the President and Board of Trustees from time to time.
  • September 15, 1961:  Creation of positions for 10 special part-time policemen at .50 cents per hour, but the total of hours per week worked by all could not exceed 153 hours.
  • August 1, 1963:  Creation of the Office of Policewoman to be in charge of all female prisoners.
  • January 1968:  Creation of the Office of Juvenile Officer.

The renovation and expansion of the old Village Hall and Police Department into the new 14,600 square feet police facility began after the completion of the new Village Hall at 301 East Irving Park Road in March of 1990.

Today's Department has grown to 54 sworn officers and a 12 member civilian support staff.  The Department is divided into 2 divisions:  Field and Support services, each led by a Deputy Chief.  The Department provides a full services law enforcement agency with uniformed patrol officers; traffic unit; Special Operations Division which includes the Tactical Unit, Criminal Investigators, Youth Services, and School Liaison Officer; Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Officers; Crime Prevention Specialists; K-9 Unit; data-processing/records clerical staff; Emergency Services Agency (ESDA) personnel; school crossing guards; and an Explorer Post (#48).  The Department services over 8 square miles and provides patrol services on over 75 miles of streets.
