Bike and Pedestrian Bridge and Trail Project

Bridge details

The Village's Comprehensive Plan envisions a number of key amenities that will help bring our community together. One item was a plan for a better-connected trail system. At its heart, was a bridge to cross Route 59 safely, and to expand our existing path system (click here to see our general Bike Map) in order to connect our community.

Over the next six years, the Village worked with residents, businesses, and civic leaders to develop plans, paths, and connection opportunities. Engineering, design, and landscaping plans were developed. Grant funds were sought, which would total over $10 million to realize this vision. On October 25, 2025, our community came together to open the bridge.

Work continues on final details including lighting, railings, and landscaping restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the bridge?
The entire length, from Madison Dr. to the west path, is 2,095 feet — close to one-half mile!

Why isn’t the sign in the center?
The State of Illinois does not allow logos or names on new bridges above driving lanes.

When are you going to paint the bridge?
The bridge material is “Weathered Steel”  and doesn’t need painting. Weathered Steel is highly corrosion resistant to ensure easy maintenance.

Why is the bridge bumpy?
The entire bridge and boardwalk path is concrete. The portions above the wetlands are made to resemble wood, and as a result have some bumps and relief. Concrete also allows easy maintenance.

Will there be benches?
The long-term plan is to install some benches at key intervals and overlooks along with wayfinding signage.

Is the bridge ADA-accessible?
Yes! In fact, this is the first, safe, fully ADA-compliant pedestrian and bicycle bridge over IL Route 59.

What happens if the state has to expand Route 59?
The bridge is built to accommodate growth accounting for the future expansion of the roadway.
