All fire stations within the Village of Streamwood are available as safe havens for infants. An unharmed newborn up to 30-days old may be handed off to a staff member with no questions asked and no fear of prosecution.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a firefighter/paramedic? Do you want to learn about fire suppression and rescue? Would you like to view the department from a unique perspective? The Citizens Fire Academy offers new insights into how firefighters/paramedics perform their duties and serve the community.

The Academy consists of classes focused on topics such as fire suppression, hazardous material response, emergency medical services (EMS), forcible entry, automobile extrication, and more. This is a free, 10-week, evening course held annually for residents and anyone who works in the Village. The completed Citizens Fire Academy application is required. Spots are limited.

CPR Classes

The Streamwood Fire Department offers a variety of CPR/BLS and First Aid classes. The department has classes designed for professionals as well as homeowners and businesses.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers is a class designed for professionals who require certification. Residents and non-residents may take these classes. The cost of this class is $30.00 for residents and $40.00 for non-residents. Each class is from 9:00 am-12:00 pm, except for February 16 and August 3, which will be 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

Stop The Bleed Trauma Course

The department is one of many agencies across the globe that offers a Stop the Bleed program. This class will teach you proper skills to treat a bleeding-based medical emergency. It’s focus is on educating people on the many trauma scenarios that occur every day, why controlling bleeding is so important, how to mitigate injuries with certain tools and hands-on skills, and how the fire department is prepared to handle an active threat situation in our community. Our instructors have added additional and relevant training skills to this class that anyone can perform to be more confident in an emergency situation.

This free, 3-hour course, is open to Streamwood businesses and residents. This course is taught by our firefighter/paramedics who are certified "Stop the Bleed" instructors. The Streamwood Fire Department Explorer Post is a program designed for high school students (ages 14-20) who are interested in pursuing a career in the Fire Service. This program gives individuals a unique, hands-on learning experience on the tactics and skills needed to become a firefighter. The Explorers are taught how to use all the tools, gear, and equipment firefighters use daily. Explorers will receive CPR and first-aid certifications and train on technical rescue, hazardous materials, water/ice rescues, emergency medicine, and auto extrication. Each Explorer is given their own set of protective firefighting gear to use at Post trainings.

Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month at Streamwood Fire Station #31 (1204 S Park Avenue). Explorer Post meetings start at 9:00 am and run to 11:00 am. Please contact Firefighter Jeff Becker at jbecker@streamwood.org to learn more or click here.

Medical emergencies can happen anytime. When they do, there is confusion, panic, and urgency. Firefighter/Paramedics arrive on the scene and may not have any information about the person in need. Seconds count – they can make the difference between life and death. Does the patient have prior medical conditions? Allergies? What medications are they taking? Who do they want us to call? How do we contact their family or friends?

File of Life puts these answers at the fingertips of responding Firefighter/Paramedics. It allows them to immediately begin the best possible treatment, notify loved ones, and pass this vital data on to awaiting physicians at the emergency room. The Streamwood Fire Department believes the File of Lift is an asset for emergency preparedness and peace of mind for every resident in our community. The department provides free File of Life magnetic pouches with a "file" insert. The cards are about 4x6 inches and meant to be kept on the refrigerator or somewhere easily seen by first responders.

Fire extinguishers have become a requirement in businesses and workplaces, as well as very common in private homes. The need for proper training is important. The Streamwood Fire Department offers information about the proper use of a fire extinguisher in a fire situation, and can set up a training scenario utilizing a hands-on deployment of a fire extinguisher, as well.

Our Juvenile Fire Starters program is dedicated to reducing the tragedy and trauma caused by children and fire related activities. The Fire Department participates in a statewide program that utilizes an identification system, intake process, interview strategies, intervention services, and thorough follow up. The program is run through the Office of the State Fire Marshall and the National Fire Protection Association, and all interventionists are trained according to the standards of each.

The Streamwood Fire and Police Departments both provide safe medical waste disposal for our residents. We collect medications and needles to keep them out of the waterways, streets, landfills, and hands of children or other unintended users. Unused or expired prescription medications can lead to poisoning, overdose, and abuse!

Drop off your unused or expired pills at the Police Department lobby in the large gray collection box (401 E. Irving Park Road), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pills should be in their original container or in a sealed plastic bag. Please do not dump loose pills in the collection box! You can drop off any type of pills, including legally held controlled drugs and narcotics.

For all other unused medications and supplies, including used or unused sharps, medication needles, liquid/powder/gel and any other medications, can be dropped off at Fire Station # 31 (1204 S. Park Avenue), Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. To prevent injury, we request that any used or unused needles be in a red sharps container or other puncture-proof containers (empty milk jug, 2-liter soda bottle, laundry detergent bottle are all fine).

In the event of an emergency, the Knox Box allows the Streamwood Fire Department personnel the ability to make entry into the residence without potential damage to the structure. The key is kept securely within the fire department apparatus and is only accessible by fire department personnel.

There is a $50 deposit required that is fully refundable once the Knox Box is returned to the department. Contact the administrative assistant at Station #31 for more information or to schedule set up at 630-736-3650.

The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program is administered cooperatively through the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Village of Streamwood. Streamwood residents can sign up for a smoke alarm installation visit that will include fire safety education. The Be Alarmed! program helps ensure that residents receive a 10-year, sealed-battery smoke alarm, installed by Streamwood Firefighters, as well as educational material aimed at preventing house fires.
